National Service Scheme (NSS)

The Planning Commission sanctioned an outlay of 5 crores for National Service Scheme (NSS) during the Fourth Five Year Plan. It was stipulated that the NSS programme should be started as a pilot project in selected institutions and Universities.

On September 24, 1969, the then Union Education Minister Dr.V.K.R.V.Raio, launched the NSS programme in 37 Universities covering all States and simultaneously requested the Chief Ministers of States for their cooperation and held.

It was appropriate that the programme was started during the Gandhi Centenary Year as it was Gandhiji who inspired the Indian youth to participate in the movement for Indian independence and the social uplift of the downtrodden masses of our nation.

St. Thomas College of Engineering & Technology has one unit of NSS (Unit no-553) under the technical cell with strength of 100 volunteers. The NSS unit of the college places an active role in shaping our students humane and responsible citizens.

The overall aim of NSS is the Personality Development of students through community service. The NSS conducting special camping programme of seven days duration in adopted places and it provides unique opportunities to the students for group living, collective experience sharing, sharing responsibilities, addressing various developmental issues of regional and national importance and constant interaction with the community.

  • Orphanage & Old age home visit programs
  • Anti Drug awareness

  • Gender Equality Awareness
  • Waste management awareness
  • Renovation of Health Center- Punnarjjani
  • Health Survey
  • Trekking etc.

STCET's NSS unit organizes many activities such as health checkup, tree plantation, blood donation, clean India, orphanage visit programs etc.

The college supports techno-social activities to fulfill its mission of Social Connect - Organizing Socially Relevant outreach programs for the benefit of Humanity.

The NSS volunteers in STCET have take up the relief operations on war footing basis. They are conducted Health campaigning. They coordinating the supply of materials required for them throughout Alappuzha District.

The NSS volunteers in STCET is look forward for take a hand on such type of activities with neighbouring panchayath of STCET.
